It's been awhile...

I am sometimes a "bad" blogger. August, I out and about a lot. I spent a week at the Old Pool Farm in PA volunteering at the Philadelphia Folk Festival as I do every year. Following that, the semester began. I am teaching four classes right now, two semester long and one five week. I will be teaching another five-week course immediately following the one I'm teaching now. No wonder I have yet to make it through Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion!

...However, there's some exciting Gigantic Sequins news!

We are almost at our financial goal that will send us to print. Help us out by becoming a Friend of Gigantic Sequins or buying a copy of our 1.1 or 1.2 issues. Or both of them.

We are holding a RAFFLE with prizes from... ModCloth, Rose Metal Press, Tao Lin and MORE. An itemized list of EVERYTHING you can win will soon be available here and on our Official Website.

So it looks like our 2.1 issue with me as editor in chief, Sophie Klahr as poetry editor and Jordan Tavenner as designer will be going to print in OCTOBER 2010! Hooray.

Those who submitted for our 2.2 issue should be notified or will be notified soon. We hope to bring that issue out in the spring.

And for those of you waiting, we should soon be accepting submissions for our 3.1 issue. This also means that our Brand Spankin' New submission guidelines will be up soon. HOLLER.

And finally, last but not least, we have promoted Zach Yontz to fiction editor for our 3.1 issue.

Saying Farewell to a Writer and Friend: David Markson

June 5, 2010 :: elegy in essay form I found out this morning via Jim Behrle's facebook and then his twitter that David Markson has passed away. "David Markson has died." Behrle doesn't blither. Quick search on the web, and I've got nothing, but this makes sense to me. Markson, a giant of postmodernism-- if you're true to the word-- maintained closer friendships than he courted publicity. His life and work are intertwined, and his memory will live on in those he touched as well as in his works of art. Perhaps I find my method of discovery at his passing ironic considering Markson himself would have never found out about anything the way I did. He would tell me, visiting the poetry and literary non-fiction stacks of Strand Bookstore, how he still used a typewriter to write, wrote things down on notecards when planning his novels, only took calls on his landline and didn't feel he had any need for a cell phone or computer. 1 lady + 3 gentlemen = 4 books bought

my weekly book purchases: 3/13/09 this week, i followed most of my rules. one full-priced (the Jack Gilbert), the rest dollar books. the bad thing about my book-buying, is that it comes at the end of my week (either Friday or Saturday), which means that i am usually over or too close to my $100 / week spending limit (yes, this is impossible, and i ALWAYS go over. always.) one of these weeks, i will buy books, and the purchases will not cause me to go over my limit. and i will be impressed and amazed with myself. i bought two poetry books, a book of essays and a novel, which is about right. i like poetry because you don't have to read poem books cover to cover, but can just browse, or read the first few, throw a bookmark in it, then the next few, etc. alright, here are my righteous finds this week...
